“Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” (John 18:37b NIV84).
As I’ve been working my way through Mark’s gospel, I’ve been struck by the fact that the basic sin of the Pharisees was refusing to acknowledge the truth about Jesus.
It’s true they were so committed to their ideology that they rejected the truth, but it could have been any ideology. The Sadducees who rejected Jesus had a very different party line, as did the Herodians.
The fact is anyone who refuses to acknowledge the truth about Jesus because they are more committed to a particular ideology than to the truth is committing the exact same sin as the Pharisees who opposed Jesus.
Pharisaic legalism is just one such worldview. Naturalistic atheism is another. Materialism (living for stuff) is yet another. Hedonism (living for pleasure) is yet another. Moralism (being “good” by one’s own standard) is yet another.
